Experimental and Theoretical Investigations of Low-Dimensional BiFeO3 System for Photocatalytic Applications

We report on the fabrication of sub-20 nm BiFeO3 (BFO) nanoparticles using a solid-state approach and preferential leching process. The were subsequently used to deposit, through spray pyrolysis, BFO thin films in rhombohedral (R3c) crystallographic structure. Then, systematic investigations optical photocatalytic properties conducted determine effects particles size, microstructure increased surface area their catalytic performances. Especially, improved observed, with an bandgap energy 2.20 eV compared reported 2.7 for bulk system. In addition, high absorption was obtained UV–visible light region reaching up 90% at 400 nm. photoelectrochemical measurements revealed photocurrent density under visible irradiation. Besides, functional theory calculations performed both film structures, revealing interesting comparison electronic, magnetic, ferroelectric systems. Both theoretical experimental findings show that alignment band edges is coherent good water splitting potential, making them desirable photoanode materials.
